actually AVG and AVAST! are really good virus-scanners. The catch is that the free version has some of its capabilities limited to only paying users. You can however, continue to use the non-paying functions as long as you like.

If you are just looking for a standalone anti-virus without all the extra root-kit, spyware, adware stuff, then i recommend Avast! It's worked for me ever since i last reformatted this computer and haven't got a virus since.

Yes it works fine, you can download the free edition from here: http://www.filehippo.com/download_avg_an...

The only thing you have to update from time to time. the free edition is good only for antivirus,

malware, spyware will not be detected, you have to use another program such as spyware doctor for this..
webroot spysweeper
avg is free but is just a simple software designed for home use. it also has a 30 day trial version and needs to be updated constantly, for hassle free life just renew your norton and look up for symantec on the web see their trial version offers
ANG is reliable but I prfer Kapersky its not free but worth every penny. Look here for AV reviews
