Does anyone agree with me if yahoo could contribute some rewards such as free download of certain software maybe a very good antivirus etc. He he he this is just a suggestion. Whether people are in it for the sake to answering question or not it does not matter but at least there is some useful contribution to those who spend the most time on the computer like getting their computer protected in return for their usage.

My computer was working fine til a couple of days ago then I noticed the antivirus had expired so I installed an avast 30 free trial to tie me over til I can order a new one. I shut the computer off and restarted it, then once I'd logged in a message popped up briefly saying 'starting program...' but I didn't get to see any more as the computer restarted itself. Once I'd logged in again it brought up what I assume to be the same message (starting program) but it shut down even quicker this time. I started it again, just in case I'd missed something, but it shut down even quicker this time.
I then started it up in safe mode, but not knowing much about computers I wasn't sure what to do when I got there! I uninstalled the program and tried to uninstall the expired antivirus but it wouldn't allow me to. Tried rebooting in normal mode but the same thing happened - it just takes itself round and round in circles.
Any ideas how to fix it?

I have just removed Norton Antivirus, personal firewall, Privacy Control, Antispam, and Parental Control after my registration expired. I have downloaded Avast AntiVirus, but would like to know of other decent free programs to replace the rest of my Norton product. Is Windows Security Firewall etc enough or good enough?

This free license home users Package does a lot of Clean Up Jobs that Avast doesn't do and is something that will complement it rather than get into a conflict with Avast.

I use AVG and Zone Alarm, both free and both seemingly effective. I gave up on Norton after downloading a new subscription which stopped my computer working. They never questioned why I wanted a refund so they must know of problems.

actually although i swear by PANDA , windows firewall in sp2 is not a bad product as i had to use it on my other desktop for a month until i bought an additional license for panda but now i believe that pandas 2007 product comes with 3 licenses instead of 1 now. it's not free but it's worth it if you value your pc. :-)

My computer was also affected by this virus, and no removal tool worked, and I couldn't download any .exe file because of the virus. yesterday, i download the trial version of Stopzilla (and antivirus prgram) and it found a trojan horse on my computer and something called hotbar. i never downloaded hotbar. Stopzilla said that hotbar had spyware in it. it also has a keylogger in it. so dont get it and if u have it, get rid of it! and then change all your passwords to everything that u type a password for on your computer. also, if u find anything called ptsnoop on your computer, get rid of it. stopzilla said that its a virus and the name of it sounds like its also a form of spyware.i kno this isnt a queshtion. im just putting it up to help people. unfortunatley i suffered from this and hotbar is on my computer. i cant get rid of it and my antivirus isnt picking it up. does anybody kno a free anti spyware program that will get rid of it? and i dont want adaware. thnx very much.

actually AVG and AVAST! are really good virus-scanners. The catch is that the free version has some of its capabilities limited to only paying users. You can however, continue to use the non-paying functions as long as you like.
If you are just looking for a standalone anti-virus without all the extra root-kit, spyware, adware stuff, then i recommend Avast! It's worked for me ever since i last reformatted this computer and haven't got a virus since.

Best practice that I know of is a Backup Routine. On install before you go online, backup everything, registry, program sys files. Keep these backups near or in the case with the PC/Laptop. After any install or altering/editing or removal of a program, make another backup. This is called B1 and B2. Use B1 when your system gets a bad virus and use B2 to restore any data that may have changed.
I clicked on a 'FREE' simpsons episode download button. And then suddenly about four antivirus programmes that i have never heard of apear and start telling me I have 204 spyware programmes on my PC. Then they ask you if you want to download their antivirus.
Furthermore i looked at one of the locations of the spywares and it said Created in 2007!! and i got this spyware breach only today. So I did a full scan of my computer with Norton, but mine is a few months old, and no spyware apeared.

well, you could start with a prog called adaware free....it will get rid of some, but you may be too far overboard and need a rerformat.

The first time that happened to me, I had to reinstall windows. Just put in the original Windows CD you got when you purchased the computer. The secomd time, I used a a program called spyware, you can download that one for free just search it in google. I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. There is only way to solve your problem, which can keep all your data intact. Follow the instructions carefully.
1. You'll need a friend with a virus-free computer with an antivirus program installed in it, and updated with the latest updates.
2. Switch your PC off, open it and carefully remove your hard-disk and dismantle all the attached cables, and carry it to your friend's computer.
3. Now, open your friend's computer and attach your hard-disk as a secondary hard-disk.

Norton and avg are both good antivirus, only thing is, norton slows your system down quie a bit compared to AVG.
if you have paid for norton then uninstal AVG, if you have the free trial of norton but have not yet paid for it then uninstall norton. never have more than on antivirus on your computer.
as far as spyware detection programs go, the more the merrier, only have one of the programs running full time as too many running will take up too much system resources.
fire up the other antispyware programs one a month, do your scans with them and put them back to bed when finnished.
It seems that you have 2 anti-VIrus and 2 anti-Spyware programs.
Remove one of the Anti-Virus, Norton's is better than AVG but it is your call. Having 2 anti-virus programs running at the same time will cause them to interfere with each other.
Having 2 anti-spyware at the same time is alright I'd just make one active and have the other scan only on manual. Of the 2 you mention Spybot is the better.

My suggestions to get rid of are: Adaware, and Spywareblaster. Adaware's detection is mediocre at best, and Spywareblaster is okay, but there are better alternatives out there.
My suggested add programs would be Spyware Doctor Starter Edition which is the best malware remover on the market, period! Also get Boclean which is like SpywareBlaster, but updated a lot more often and covers a lot more malware. It will work quietly in the background until some malware is trying to install itself, then it will have a pop-up describing the malware and telling you that it has been blocked. Both of these programs are available @ www.download.com for free.

Good, now try a program that doesn't use all of you resources and won't cost you a thing. AOL Active Virus Shield powered by Kaspersky is currently the best free anti-virus (99.62% detection rate). The most popular free anti virus programs are AVG Free and Avast which are recommended above Norton and McAfee but have poor detection rates (82.82%, 87.46% respectively). Norton is notoriously bloated and takes forever to perform full systems scans. If you want to pay for an anti-virus NOD32 is highly recommended. Its your voice over internet protocol driver. You are probably using yahoo chat or some other app which you talk to someone over the net on a microphone. Let your zone alarm allow it if you use this feature.

i use windows xp home edition. I have 1GB ram, yet at times it so happens that when i launch a program it doesnt open up beyond the splash screen. This happens when i have a few windows already open, typically its 2-3 browser windows, yahoo messenger windows, windows live e-mail and some graphic editing or html editing programs. I also have copernic desktop search indexing my computer and AVG antivirus. Zonelabs firewall is active all the time. Mailwasher Free is also resident in my taskbar and frequently checks mail on my pop3 server.
I'd like to know that inspite of having 1 GB ram why is it that some programs dont launch? They launch only after i have shut some of my open windows.
Believe that 1GB ram should be good enough to typically open 8-10 windows of the most often used programs e.g. graphic editors, html editors, word processor, yahoo messenger, anti-virus, etc.
The RAM has nothing to do with a program not opening, it would tell you that there wasn't enough system resources if that were the case. I have this problem at times to yet I haven't found a solution to it yet. I think it's a software bug and not hardware related. Most of the time with me it happens with EA made files, they never had good coding to begin with though. Does it only happen with certain files or programs?

First uninstall the virus software using the add/remove programs in the control panel. You can get a free virus program at www.avast.com it works real well, loads fast, and tie up fewer resources. Then go to, START, RUN, and type in msconfig, this will open the configuration panel, click the Startup tab and disable all nonessential programs from running every time you re-boot (these programs will still be available when you need them, but will not run in the background and slow the machine down.
Ok picture you PC as being a big old closet with a few clothes in it...its easy to get to them clothes because they aint too many in there..so what if you buy more clothes? the closet gets more and more clothes in it and it gets harder to find what you want to wear...a PC gets these temporary internet files loaded into it evertime you open another page...after a while 60 or 70 megs can build up.thats a lot of the memory that you need to load faster thats being taken up by them temporary files...on top of that your pc want to FIND a space and catagorize and fill in just the right spot...this slows down the pc..getting rid of these files is easy enough..go to system tools and do a disk cleanup.try it t wont mess up any programs you have now..you wont lose nothing but some old clothes that you is tired of a wearing anyways right?

I purchased a new laptop...the anti virus is running out in a couple of days...I have norton with my desktop..a free service with Rogers. Do I have to purchase the antivirus for the laptop or will it just carry on as part of my Roger's package???

This is one of the most common problems that PC computer users have and it frustrates them to no end. There are many possible causes for Windows XP to be running very slow. Carry out the few basic checks below first and if they don't help, then try my other suggestions or visit the web sites in the resource section.
Check 1:- How much Free Disk Space Do You Have?
Check to see that your hard disk isn't full. To do this open Windows file explorer select the C: drive do a right mouse button click and select ''Properties'' to see how much free space is on the C: drive. You need to have at least 2Gb free hard disk space otherwise Windows XP will struggle. If you have been downloading videos and music files, you may have run out of hard disk space. You definitely have enough free hard disk space at 18.6GB.

Click Control + Alt + Delete and go the process tab.
Write down all of the processes. Search for them in Google and see if any are viruses or spy/adware. If so, download KillBox ( http://www.killbox.net/ ) and end those programs. Then, do virus scans again, including Avast! Anti-Virus ( http://www.avast.com/ )
Hopefully this works. If it doesn't, go to a spyware forum and get further help on your computer. You may be more infected than you think. After you are finished, make sure to get a firewall, Firefox, and some other things to protect your computer.

I do a quick scan with antivirus and antispyware every day, and a full scan once a week. I used disk defragmenter and cleanup last night.
I usually download stuff at about 200 KBs per second, but for the past few days I've only been able to download at about 50 KBs per second. Other stuff like internet explorer and pretty much everything is going slow too.
I have a good dsl internet connection so don't suggest that. I've also done scans with many antivirus and antispyware programs, so I'm pretty sure I don't have any of that.
The only thing that runs on start up is my internet. At msconfig under services everything is checked, should I change that?
That's about all I can think of... If I think of anything else I'll add it.
Hi. IE7 has some new filtering added which runs every time you go to a site or download. Some can be adjusted or turned off. This may help. Check Task Manager to find out what is actually running and shut down unneeded processes.

The phone memory doesn't refer to your internal memory, its the ram, what you have to do is press the menu button for 4 seconds it will open up a list on the left side, these are all the programs that are running in the background, just close these and the phone memory problem should be fixed.
The best anti-virus is f-secure, some N-series phones come with it pre-installed in the 'Applications' folder, if its not there you can get it from the Nokia website.

I have used AVG Anti Virus, Zone Alarm Firewall, Spy-bot Search and Destroy and Ad Aware both spyware killers for years. They are all free for personal use and I have had no trouble with Viruses Trojans etc. AVG does not slow the system down as much as some other products and Zone Alarm allows a lot of personal configuration unlike the Windows Firewall. I just had the same problem. The people on here helped me. You need and antispyware program. There are free ones but spyware dr came most highly recommended. (29.95) The Trojan will not let you run the scan. You have to do the scan and the cleaning in safe mode. Shut the computer down, and then turn it on. When you come to the black screen that says press F2 to set up or F12 to boot menu- hit F12. after that, repeatedly hit F8 and then enter; you will see a menu screen. Select the safe mode option. If you have an antispyware, run the scan then. If not you will probably have to buy the disk(that's what I had to do). For safe measure I would disconnect your computer from the internet. The hackers can retrieve your info. You can do the scan without being connected.

You're on the right track -- you are infected.
Your anti-virus software was either not up to date at the time of infection (for instance you didn't update it until AFTER this started happening), or it didn't protect you against this problem.

The laptop I am using at the moment has 700mhz, a 9-gig hard drive, 128MB (RAM) and I have absolutely no problems whatsoever with it. Sure, its about 9 years old (it was my fiances, she has a new one now) but in my opinion of you keep it clean of programs that use up a lot of memory/space then you should be fine. It does take a little longer to load, but i access the net, download stuff, chat and play games such as The Sims with no trouble at all. I am having issues where my PC runs terribly slow.
So far I have:
1) Turned off the vast majority of items in my msconfig.
2) Cleaned up all temporary files on my PC.
3) Defragmented my PC.
4) Scanned my PC with Spybot %26 Adaware (Lavasoft)
5) Scanned my PC with AVG Antivirus.
I currently have 116gb of my 150gb hard drive free so I don't have too much junk.

1. Try uninstalling the drivers for your audio hardware and restarting your pc. During the restart Windows ''should'' redetect your hardware and then reinstall the correct drivers.
To do this open Device Manager:

-In Device Manager double click on ''Sound, video, and game controllers''. Look for your audio hardware. Everytime I am away from my computer for any length of time ( a few hours to a few days) when I return - it has logged itself onto the interent and different folders are open on my desktop...Programs/Common or some misc. text file from my desktop. Is there a way to see which program requested the connection to be established? I have SBC Yahoo's included Norton antivirus/spyware running and it says that I am bug free. Couple of things you can do.
First,, you can install a personnel firewall (Comodo is an example that is free). It will only allow connections to the internet which you explicitly allow. If anything else attempts to connect, it will be logged.
Next, you can install a packet sniffer (I use Wireshark). This is a bit more complicated since you would have to be fairly familiar with TCP/IP traffic. You can't really hurt anything using this, you just might not understand what you are looking at.
Although your AV is not picking anything up, I would recommend running a rootkit detector as it sounds like someone might be controlling your desktop remotely.

Go to Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Event Viewer and look at the logs to see if you can narrow down what is causing you to automatically log on.
Also check Control Panel, Scheduled Tasks to see if anything is indicated there as well.
Finally go to Control Panel, Power Options and confirm that you are set up to actually turn off the computer. It could be actually going into a hibernation or sleep mode then restarting when a scheduled task comes due.

hi well i was trying to download a motorola unlocking program, so i found a program, opened it, and it was stuffed full of virus's.
right well this computer in quesiton is a desktop. it has a wireless USB adapter in it. because of the whole windows XP bug, i have to go into services and start the whole wireless zero configuration, then the wireless worked.
anyway since i had all these virus's, i ran norton antivirus (it found nothing, bloody useless), so i downloaded a FREE virus program (AVG 7.5) and it found 8, and successfully removed them.
anyway during the virus, wireless zero configuration wouldnt start. since ive removed the virus's, it WILL start, however it just doesnt work.
i cant keep having to plug in my N95 to get internet.

Try running the computer in safe mode by pressing F8 while it is starting and selecting safe mode. when asked if you would like to use system restore, press yes and restore your system to an earlier time. If you are unable to run system restore then you may have to backup your precious files and reinstall windows. This is a registry problem but you cannot run a registry editing utility if you cannot run .exe files!
Try temporarily disabling your anti-virus while opening your executable file.
If that does not work, add extra details like a screenshot or a description of exactly what happened
P.S. I don't use anti virus 'cause I'm not stupid enough to open Ms-dos apps! Or .exe files that aren't programs or something like that!

Ubuntu is really a nice distribution of Linux. I am using it myself. But more of it is like that I use Linux some kind of pressure when I have to write programs and stuff. So it is very developer friendly but a common day to day user might find it hard to use just like you are experiencing,
It takes a lot of patience to get it going as you might not find each and everything available in Ubuntu to support all your hardware. I went almost crazy at first while setting up my WiFi connection.
As I can see you are not interested in spending money otherwise I would have suggested you to take paid support from Ubuntu that works mostly. For now if you choose to continue with Ubuntu then try going through there forums and it can really be very time consuming.

First, turn off system restore, viruses/spyware will hide itself in there so once you remove it, it will just restore itself. To turn off system restore, right click on your 'My Computer' icon, select 'Properties'. System Properties window will appear, select the 'System Restore' tab, check the box to turn off system restore here. It may take a few seconds for it to disable system restore so be patient.
Now go to www.ccleaner.com, download, install and run this to delete all temporary files on your computer.
Now that that is finished, download all the updates for your antivirus and antispyware programs. You can download trial versions of several good products to remove these infections and then just uninstall them once you are rid of the junk. In addition to your current list, I would suggest Spy Sweeper, Trend Micro antivirus, Trend Micro antispyware, Avast! antivirus, and Fprot antivirus.
The Norton Antivirus on this computer can find the virus but cannot remove it, and when I tried to remove it manually, it complained because Norton Antivirus was ''using'' it. The Norton Antivirus wont knock off so I was wondering if there was any free, affective removal programme to download which would remove this, and any other Trojan.Vundo viruses the computer may have.

please do not use panda because i use pand internet security and its c r a p going to format my pc soon because 1 uninstalling it is a nuisance because it has some of my system files in quartine when theres nothing there and 2 any time i log on to yahoo it detects it as spyware in the 2 weeks i have had it on its after detecting over 1800 spyware cant wait to format my pc and i wont ever put panda on my pc again
I recommend downloading AVG (anti-virus) and Spybot-Search and Destroy (anti-spyware). I recommend these programs because they are both free, easy to use, and highly effective.
Microsoft is providing a free download of windows defender beta 2 which I believe is antivirus %26 spyware scanner all in one. Any comments? Good or bad?
It seen like different operation with the previous one which is Microsoft Anti Spyware Beta 1. Windows Defender Beta 2 is more like automatically execute by it own and it just scan for critical items but not for suspected items. I also using Ad-Aware Personal SE as well and it gives me a lot of detected ''items''. However, I think using two or more than two spyware programs are the best way to prevent from infected. As long as I using Windows Defender Beta 2, it give me a good impression. Furthermore, it will updated through windows updated.

Windows Defender is a bit permissive and allows some questionable files to exist. On the other hand it seems to work fairly well, and the resident mode is not as confusing as SPYBOT S%26D is to unseasoned users.

Hello I am running a XP SP2 1 GB RAM P4 2.8 GHz and I have a few free light security software on my computer including (Spyware Blaster, Avast AntiVirus, ADAware SE, Pc Cillin Internet Security [The Updates have expired so now I use it mainly as a firewall])
On an occasion when I am browsing a window appears saying firefox has encountered an error and needs to close. Coinsidentally it happens a lot when I have to firefox screens up or a yahoo mail up. Why is this happening?
If it helps to know I turned Windows Firewall off because it kept blocking my online gaming (Steam - which is counterstrike, cs cource, condition zero....)
Don't forget the plug-ins. They sometimes cause problems. Try running Firefox in safe mode (Firefox safe-mode, that is, not Windows safe-mode.) If Firefox runs without any errors, then it's one of your plug-ins.
Firefox has released several updates this week, and Microsoft will next week. Also check out Yahoo for updates too if you use their toolbars and Instant Messaging Services. You can set your computer to do these updates for you in some cases. Also why not Microsoft Beta Anti-Spy? And AVG anti virus programs ? They will not conflict with you other programs. And again they like Avast can auto update and run when you tell them too. Also check into WinPatrol. It is free too. And it auto-runs and tells you everything that is running on your system, not just the start up menu. It also gives you free info on them unlike task Manager from Windows. And you can tell your Windows Firewall to let your game run through the firewall. If it has subordinate programs to chat or play on the net you can include them too. But security is the number one thing you should take care of. Updates and programs to fight the threats out there. If you look you will find them free. And the ones I named are not just trials. They are for the life of the license agreement. Finally find an ISP that will block out a lot of the known threats in emails and such. You might pay more, but the peace of mind is worth it.
it's not just firefox. internet explorer does that to me sometimes too. just a glitch - remember, nothing's perfect
Does it happen at certain websites? Sometimes webpages just crash your browser, like Heavy.com. When I'm on a media link site they don't tell you it's a link to Heavy.com so when the window opens and it's Heavy.com I say ''DAMMIT HEAVY!'' and shut the window and then Firefox crashes. I multitask too much so I'm always switching windows too so sometimes it crashes that way.
Try reinstalling firefox or updating it. It may be doing that because of corrupted browser or outside mallicious access to ur computer. Turn on firewall and see if it helps.. its recommended to keep it on anyways.. if u want to play online games just add these programs and the ports they use to the exception list.
try uninstalling and reinstalling firefox....

512 is crap for memory it is about the starting point I personally will not use a system with less than 2 GIGS that is the equivilent of 4 times what you have...
Wow what a flame thred there Jaustin. You attack the guy for being right? I think 512 RAM is small I have 1024 RAM (which is double 512) my system has been great since I added memory. I spent a lot of time looking for problems and simply adding more RAM immediately fixed the problem...

Go to TASK MANAGER,
click on CPU to sort it in order and see if any task is specifically hogging the CPU.
Clicking on PERFORMANCE, any healthy system should hover around 0-5% CPU USAGE given your specs if you don't run too many services or applications.
512MB is well above requirements. The previous person is wrong to suggest you need double. Given your specs your system should run with no problems.
BTW the link he gave you was for Internet bandwidth which makes no difference on how slow your system may be running.

But Still I am looking at having a proper framework in place.

Keep getting message from Spy Sweeper that adware.gen %26 trojan.gen are trying to install on my computer, but I can't get rid of them because I don't have full version (only free version)! Get those A LOT! Also W32/SelfStarterInternet Trojan!Maximus found during antivirus scan (still going after almost 3 hours) and the icon for the antivirus is flashing red! Windows(C) Security Registry keeps sending me message that they encountered a problem and need to shut down. I've tried to install AVG and other such programs, but keep getting error messages during installation! What is going on!! I just reinstalled Windows XP about a week ago %26 everything was fine! I am doing a RegCure scan right now that I just installed %26 it's finding lots of stuff! Any other suggestions that I could do? I also installed Hi-Jack This and will post the log in additional details....Thanks!

That should help remove some of that stuff. You should also install something like Mcafee firewall. If you have Comcast, Mcafee is free to download.
